“The doctor gave me Vitamin M, and told me to rest or go to physical therapy.  He never told me what the cause of my pain is.  I never learned how to FIX my issue.”

Unfortunately, the military and VA physical therapy systems are built to fail you.  Overburdened clinics mean you get 15, maybe 30 minutes with a staff therapist. If you get to see a therapist, that is.  More often than not, someone in pain gets a standard exercise and stretching sheet that is not specific to the patient’s needs.  What if stretching makes you worse?  What if the stretches have nothing to do with the actual SOURCE of the issue? What’s actually causing the low back pain, the herniation, the decreased range of motion, the rotator cuff tendonosis, the tendonitis, the headaches, the patellar pain, the hip impingement, the piriformis syndrome, the sciatica, the bulged disc?

3 Tips to Helping Yourself Heal and Getting What You Need

  1. You need a quality physical evaluation from a bona fide movement expert that can identify the cause of your injury or pain, and not get lost in symptoms.  If you’re active duty or a dependent of someone who’s active duty, the clinic needs to be a Tricare physical therapy provider.  If you are a veteran, the clinic needs to be a registered Veterans Choice physical therapy provider.  (Movement Rx is both.)
  2. You need a quality rehabilitation program that you can follow each week to help heal yourself..  That program needs to include joint and tissue work, downregulation tools and a proper strength development plan that is customized to your particular issue.
  3. Finally, once you’re back to baseline, you will need guidance post injury and rehab on how to progress back into the activities you want to do.  Whether it is Zumba, CrossFit, Spartan Racing, yoga…whatever it is you can re-find the physical freedom to participate.

Here are your options for getting an outside tricare physical therapy provider as a service member or dependent as well as Veterans Choice physical therapy provider as a veteran.

  1. TriCare Prime: Go to your Primary Care Manager (PCM) and ask for an authorization and referral for physical therapy.  Specifically ask to be referred out to Movement Rx Physical Therapy or Dr. Theresa Larson (different databases have different names for us).  If granted, we will get a faxed letter authorizing your care within  2-3 days.  Your out of pocket costs depend on your specific plan, but are typically between $0 and $30 per visit.
  2. TriCare Select (formerly Standard):  Select members can self-refer directly to our office. We are in-network, meaning your cost share will be between $25-$41 per visit based on active duty status as well as Group A vs Group B participation.  If you’re unsure of your plan speciics, give us a call at 619-210-0945 and we’ll find out for you.  After your visits, we submit visit information to TriCare for direct reimbursement.
  3. TriCare Reserve Select:  Same as Tricare Select, but for qualified National Guard and Reserve members.
  4. TriCare Retired Reserve: Same as Tricare Select, but for qualified Reserve members and survivors.
  5. TriWest (VA Choice Program or VA CCC):  You must go to your Primary Care Physician or Nurse Practitioner at the VA and be referred to physical therapy, or call 866-606-8198.  If the wait for a VA therapy session is over 30 days (the average wait has been as long as 3 months), you can ask to be referred out,  Ask to be placed in the VA Choice Program, and specifically request Movement Rx Physical Therapy or Dr. Theresa Larson.  For Veterans there is no out of pocket cost for your visits with us.
