The Connection Between Gratitude and Business Growth
Dr. T went Live on Sep 27, 2023 to discuss the connection between gratitude and business growth inspired by a talk by keynote speaker and author Chris Schembra at an Economic Alliance Conference. On top of the benefits to health and wellbeing associated with gratitude practices, there are organizational and economic reasons to bring gratitude to your leadership teams.
Here’s what you need to know about incorporating gratitude into your business to see more growth:
#1: Existing leadership trainings tend to focus ONLY on productivity and conflict resolution.
We think that these topics are both outdated and entirely miss the human connection dimension, the glue that ties us all together and inspires us to work cooperatively in the first place. It comes from a reactive place where productivity has ALREADY dropped, and conflict is ALREADY simmering. However, focusing on connecting with your people, in addition to optimizing their performance, can create an environment where productivity is intrinsically high, and conflict is limited to the important issues rather than interpersonal issues.
#2: Expressing gratitude can open up deeper human connections in the business leadership space.
Gratitude is the quality of being thankful and willingness to appreciate and return kindness. How are you expressing gratitude in your business? This may seem like a lost art, especially in work relationships, where we tend to be more transactional. But in fact, simply listening to what your people say (and don’t say), what they do (and don’t do), and thanking them for their input can do a lot of good for creating connection.
Why does this matter? Because creating a culture of gratitude and human connection and work is critical for keeping your people feeling like they matter (and THEY DO). People leave when they are burned out or feel like they don’t matter, and as a leader, it’s your responsibility to intervene, starting with human connection. This culture of human connection can:
- Increase individual goal achievement by 31%
- Improve your teams’ wellbeing by 36%
- Improve professional growth by 59%
These are not small numbers. Start connecting, starting with gratitude.
#3 Gratitude is a strategy for economic expansion (growth!)
If the above statistics didn’t convince you to do everything you can to create a culture of gratitude and human connection in the teams you lead, here’s some more. . . When a company leader shows up expressing gratitude, we see the following:
- Their teams are 81% more driven
- The leader is TWO TIMES more likely to be trusted
- The leader’s cardiovascular stress is 54% lower
When your people are more driven, they feel better about what they’re doing, they want to be there doing work for you, and they are less likely to mentally check out. With all of these benefits, what are you waiting for?
